How I’m Learning to Stop Being a People Pleaser

I consider myself to be a fairly tough chick. This hasn’t always been the case. Growing up with a strong-willed and often emotionally, verbally, and physically abusive mother, I felt weak and useless most of the time. Growing up in a family of other strong-willed people just exacerbated that feeling. Although I had the same loud voice and physical presence (we are not a small bunch), I never felt like I had the same inner fire.

And perhaps I didn’t. I was in survival mode most of the time, I think…

People are weird and you can’t please them all.

I moved from Texas to Tennessee when I was 14 (way back in 1988). Doesn’t really seem like that drastic of a move does it? Both states are in the south, both are known for their “good ol’ boys”, and let’s face it, a lot of Tennesseans migrated down to Texas back in the day. It should have been an easy transition, right? Not so much. Here are a couple of the questions I was asked by classmates in my first few days.

1. Did you ride horses everywhere? Have you ever ridden in a car before?

2. Did you…

Two days ago I officially announced the closure of my web design business. I have not had a new project in eleven months. When the bill for my hosting and domain re-seller account came up due last month, I couldn’t pay it and so my business websites (all of them, including my book website and my writing blog) have been gone since then. But last night I made it Facebook Official.

By admitting it openly to everyone I know, via Facebook, I was finally able to admit it to myself. That has been the hardest part. I’ve been stewing in…

It’s that time of year again. A couple of weeks ago everyone made a bunch of New Year’s Resolutions. Three weeks in and most of them have been discarded and everyone is feeling crappy about it. We are often very hard on ourselves. Instead of making resolutions, we should try, instead, to be a little kinder to ourselves.

Are you or someone you know a self-bully?

Your first reaction might be that “self-bully” is a term I must made up. Okay, so it is. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t real. I use it to define the habitual negative self-talk many of us engage in on a daily basis.

According to the National Centre Against Bullying, “Bullying is an ongoing and deliberate misuse of power in relationships through repeated verbal, physical and/or social behavior that intends to cause physical, social and/or psychological harm. …

Let me be very, very clear…there are spoilers for Veronica Mars Season 4 in this diatribe, so if you haven’t watched it yet, you may want to go binge it and come back later.

I should also warn that you shouldn’t expect this to be a shining example of my writing. My emotions are raw and I’ve had too much coffee and not enough sleep — who could sleep peacefully after that ending?

First off let me say that in the title when I say “Veronica Mars” I mean the whole show, not the lead character, not the beautiful Kristen…
